LIGATURE XIII: EXPANSION
On view through March 24

Celebrating its 13th year, Ringling Type Club presents Ligature XIII: Expansion - a juried exhibition showcasing the typographic excellence of the Ringling College student body. This exhibition features works from every major in various categories such as Drop Cap, Type in Motion, Hand Lettering, and Books & Publication.

Ligature XIII: Expansion is the transition from architectural themes into new avenues of execution and style. We express this through a collection of posters for the show created by students from various majors at Ringling College. Through this theme, our goal is to show that typography is an essential part of every path of Art & Design, and should be considered as such.

This year’s exhibition was directed by Art Morris and produced by members of Ringling Type Club including Diego Villarreal, Katelyn Matikonis, Foster Hirsch, Avery Frost, & Dave Scheele.

THE MANGROVES OF MASTERS BAYOU: TOWARD A PHILOSOPHY OF A NATURAL SPOT
On view through April 21

Mangrove forests are magically material. Here, existing by definition in liminal spaces where sea water meets fresh water, fertility abounds. Mangrove leaves drop and decompose, forming a fetid mud beneath their trunks, creating land where there was no land, and providing dwellings for all manner of fish and crustaceans. Their wealth of food sources has been important to human inhabitants. Today, the protection these plants afford against dangerous weather formations is more important than ever.

Motifs of mangroves have inspired many. Poets have found extraordinary raw material for their works here. Caribbean novelists and philosophers throughout the world have explored the rhizomatic connections in the structure of mangals which inform our understanding of common existential issues.

The Mangroves of Masters Bayou, an installation by guest artist Jay Youngdahl, explores myriad meanings in mangrove forests. It is inspired by Masters Bayou, a part of Tampa Bay which abuts the Weedon Island Nature Preserve, and a locale where a vibrant Native American culture flourished for at least a 1,000 years. The exhibition touches on the complexity of the material and ideological issues that inhabit this liminal space, taking over the Brizdle-Schoenberg Special Collections Center's exhibition cases and reading room.

AURA
On view through March 3

Featuring and Curated by Gabrielle Higgs, Adam Jones, and Marley Jabloner

The first Fine Arts Department group thesis show is proud to announce and welcome you to the exhibition Aura. Aura is the energy that surrounds and is generated by a person, place, or object. Although these artists have different views on spirituality they came together to express a topic that is too beautiful and powerful to put into words. As Edward Hopper, a remarkable American painter once said, “If you could say it in words there would be no reason to paint.” Within this exhibition Gabrielle Higgs will be displaying her bold atmospheric changing portraits of people of color, Adam Jones showing his reminiscent portraits of old friends and medieval characters that are satisfyingly peaceful, and Marley Jabloner will be showing her alluring abstract pieces. Within the bodies of work shown, they explore the energy that surrounds and is generated by a person, place, or object.

THERMAN STATOM: CUENTO SOBRE EL APRENDIZAJE: STORIES ABOUT LEARNING
On view through March 24

Therman Statom, sculptor, glass artist, and painter – is most notably known as a pioneer of the contemporary glass movement for his life-size glass ladders, chairs, tables, constructed box-like paintings, and small-scale houses; all created through the technique of gluing glass plates together. Sandblasted surfaces become a canvas for spontaneous vibrant colors and line work, which take nuances from Abstract Expressionism and concepts of Minimalism, while simultaneously incorporating a twist by using blown-glass elements and found objects.
