CUTTING EDGE: AMERICAN COLLAGE 1935 – PRESENT

MARCH 1 — MARCH 27, 2021

WILLIS A. SMITH CONSTRUCTION INC. GALLERY

2363 Bradenton Road

Collage as a technique and process of invention has played a decisive role in contemporary image making. From the beginning, it was associated with the revolt against painting as an art of imitation.

From Romare Bearden’s collages on paper to the early illustrative collages of Andy Warhol, this exhibition discovers the seemingly limitless ways that American modern and contemporary artists have mixed materials to create something entirely new and surprising.

Cutting Edge includes the layered artworks of visionaries in the art world including Romare Bearden, Ilya Bolotowsky, John Chamberlain, Sue Coe, John Evans, India Evans, Robert Goodnough, Balcomb Greene, Gertrude Greene, Grace Hartigan, George Herms, Greg Lamarche, Philomena Marano, P.H.A.S.E. 2, and Andy Warhol.
